Compact & Feature-Packed
DeWalt introduced their new 20 Volt Max compact impact driver last year, and I absolutely loved it. Now they’ve improved it by switching to a brushless motor, adding three speed settings and redesigning the collet to make it easier to change hex-style bits.
A brushless motor is more efficient, and that translates into longer running time. According to DeWalt, you now can work 57% longer between chargings.
The previous 20 Volt Max was a one-speed, which was overkill for most cabinetmaking jobs. With three settings, you’ll be able to cover a much wider range of driving tasks.
The new collet features a push-button release. Now, you don’t have to let go of the drill’s handle to change bits or drivers. You just extend your forefinger and depress a button located above the trigger. Your other hand is free to remove the bit and switch to a new one.
The new motor also allowed DeWalt to make this impact driver lighter and even more compact. Equipped with a 1.5 amp-hr. battery, the driver weighs 3 lbs. (It weighs 3.6 lbs. with a 3 amp-hr. battery.) At just 5-1/4″ long, nose to tail, you can get into some pretty tight spaces, and the grip is extraordinarily comfortable.
A “fuel gauge” on the battery pack gives you a quick indication of how much battery life is left. If you already own other tools that use the same DeWalt battery, you can purchase this impact driver without batteries at a lower price.
