If you’ve been trying to reach me during the last few weeks, I apologize. The answers to your questions are:

1. Almost any species of wood will do fine for your workbench.

2. There is no quality difference between Veritas and Lie-Nielsen handplanes.

3. Eagle, and sometimes plov.

When I stop answering my phone and e-mail, it’s amazing how much more woodworking gets done. Today I finished all the mortises and tenons for the base, fit the short stretchers and trued up the shoulders. As luck would have it, two of the four joints went together right from the the saw. The other two required a tad more plov.

ah, I too have a chisel talisman…it’s a swan best cast steel; it’s the last tool in my collection (however meager!) that I’d part with…not even before the ward and payne laminated pig sticker!

  • Aluminum Extrusions

Looking great… can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s finished. Keep up the great work, hope the distractions are minimum.

    Chris,

Very nice looking bench. I’m enjoying watching it come together. Did I read that you purchased the wood for this work bench at Home Depot? What were the original rough dimensions of the stock?

It’s tougher than it looks. Stringy, too.

  • Swanz

Good thing you making them legs thick considering that wood looks kindah soft.

Yes, I was definitely joking about the switch of blade manufacturers. Both companies have such consistently good blades that it’s a non-factor (at least for me) when deciding between them.

    I did say “almost.”
I guess Veritas planes now stink? Hope you are joking.
    Favorite food: Eagle-fried plov!

    1. balsa?
    2. But Veritas switched blade manufacturers.
    3. …?

Oh, and I’m interested and somewhat not intereseted in the "birdhouse."

Talisman…sounds magical. If you find another Buck Bros chisel just like that, buy it for me and I’ll pay you back (including shipping)!

    Ah Nate,

That Buck Bros. 1-1/4" socket chisel is my talisman. Before I acquired that tool I was building birdhouses. And now I build… birdhouses (more info to come).

Everyone needs a wide chisel like this. It’s a secret weapon against all sorts of bad mojo.

    Drawboreded…..does that mean double-pegged?

  • Christopher Schwarz

This is a dry-fit. The base will definitely be drawborededed. A lot.

Plov is good but the saffron is to expensive. Nice job on the bench.

  • Culinary Duffer?

    OK I’ll bite… Plov?

  • Ryan M

    Why no drawbore?

  • Nate Hinkle

I like that chisel…I’ll take it if you don’t want it.

  • Good for you. It seems that sometimes all the talk about woodworking gets in the way of the woodworking.

I wonder if Roubo had that problem?
