Right before “Woodworking in America” turned into “Dead Tired in Covington,” I finished this square for the December 2010 issue of Popular Woodworking Magazine. The square is based closely on an original that tool pusher Patrick Leach brought back from England.
I showed him my curly maple version of the square at Woodworking in America, and he said: “Yup. That’s it.”
This story almost has an unhappy ending. The original square was destroyed when it was mailed to its new owner, Leach said. But thanks to the plans coming in the next issue, we woodworkers can make many more clones.
I really like this square , so much that I’m completing the second one today.
