“Lefty loosey, righty tighty” is what comes to mind when you hear the word screwdriver. A screwdriver is the staple of toolboxes, and even people who don’t own a toolbox have one lying around. Despite being based on a simple principle of tightening and loosening screws, this tool with a handle, shaft, and tip can help in various DIY projects around your house.

Below, we have shared a few practical DIYs you can perform with a screwdriver. All these ideas are simple and easy enough that by the end of this article, you’ll be saying, “hand me that screwdriver,” and getting down to business.

ADJUST DOOR HINGES

Every other house has a loose cabinet or closet door. Although it is troublesome to open and close, most people simply make their peace with it. You don’t have to struggle every time you open that door, however, if you only use a screwdriver to tighten a few screws.

A simple manual screwdriver can help you adjust the screws that loosen over time. If a few screws are missing, you can also replace them with new ones and have a functional door in no time.

ASSEMBLE FURNITURE

Many contemporary furniture stores are designing items that require minimal tools to assemble. For instance, you can buy a bookshelf or study desk online, which will come in a large box. Its pieces will be unassembled, but that shouldn’t intimidate you because, in most cases, all you need is a screwdriver. You’ll have to follow the instructions on the manual that comes with the product. It will help you determine what goes where and you can leave the rest to your trustworthy screwdriver.

SWITCH CABINET HANDLES AND DRAWER PULLS

Want to upgrade your kitchen’s look? Updating the hardware is the easiest and most cost-effective way of revamping your kitchen. By simply swapping silver cabinet handles or drawer pulls with gold ones, you can create a completely whole new look for your kitchen.

You only need the new hardware and a screwdriver to switch your cabinet hardware. First, you will unscrew the old handles and pulls. Then, you’ll clean everything with a damp cloth and repair anything broken. Lastly, you’ll fix the new hardware you picked for your cabinets and drawers.

REPLACE DOOR KNOBS

Another quick DIY home project you can do with a simple screwdriver is replacing your door knobs. You can do it to simply update the aesthetics of your place or replace a non-working door knob with one that works.

While a manual screwdriver works fine, you can use an electric screwdriver to make this job easier. You should follow the manual that comes with a new door knob to install it without hitting any road bumps.

INSTALL A TOWEL BAR

Having a towel bar in the bathroom is a practical step. If you already have one, you can switch it with a new one to update the aesthetics of your bathroom. Make sure you get a towel bar of the same length to avoid leaving noticeable holes and install it quickly.

Note: If your bathroom walls have tiles, you’ll need a drill machine to create holes for the screws — at least for the first towel bar to be installed.

CONCLUSION

Although a screwdriver is one of the most basic tools in a toolbox, it proves handy for simple home projects and DIYs. Anyone can learn how to use a screwdriver and get the job done. You can save money by doing simple tasks around your house yourself instead of hiring a handyman to do those for you.
