Walnut Bookcase by Bill Groff, Metamora, IL
"I spent this last winter (and Spring and part of the Summer!)building a larger version of the bookcase that appeared in the November 2005 issue of American Woodworker. Essentially the same style, but larger (11 feet long, 8 feet tall). I used the same overall construction techniques, which worked very well even for its massive size.
I made three sections on the bottom, an 11'x18" SOLID walnut top to tie those together (they don't make plywood that long!), then three sections on top with an 11'x13" crown moulding topper. I used about 5 sheets of walnut plywood (including some of the shelves) and the rest was solid walnut. Used solid wood on all the exterior, as plywood just doesn't stain or finish as well. Ended up using five gallons of pre-cat lacquer, which made a beautiful finish. Turned out wonderful. Thanks for the great plans!"
