Lumberyard Directory
Editors note: this list is no longer being updated as of 1/1/2020
This lumberyard map is the result of a long-term survey asking readers to report their favorite lumberyards. It was created from a survey conducted by Managing Editor Brendan Bernhardt Gaffney, as a part of an upcoming article on sourcing lumber, and the story of two particular lumberyards with very different stock and similar motivations. Each point on the map can be clicked to reveal the information for that point, including address, phone number and website. Listed below is also a directory of the entries that you can browse through, independent of the map.
The map and directory are not intended as endorsements or advertisements for the lumberyards they feature – rather, they are an attempt to share recommended lumberyards from our readers so that others might have an easier time finding a lumberyard near them, or discover a new one on a trip or vacation.
It’s also a living document – as you can see, the list has blind spots and can be improved upon. If you have a favorite local lumberyard you don’t see listed, or would like to add your two cents to a yard that’s already represented, feel free to send it along to brendan.gaffney@fwmedia.com along with your name and a short review describing why you like the lumberyard. This isn’t a list of every lumberyard – please only submit your favorite yards. I’d also appreciate only receiving positive listings – while there are certainly bad yards out there, they don’t need to be put on the map here. This is a guide, curated to provide good locations, not a review page for every wood monger. We’re hoping to help everyone find the best wood available in their area.
Submit your local lumberyard (with your name & a description of why you like the yard).

“I’ve picked up very some very clear, over 12″ wide ambrosia maple there a number of times along with cherry and other types of lumber. I’ve also seen gum tree and other unusual woods there as well. In my experience, they deal with hobbyists looking for small to medium quantities of lumber. They’ve also got a bargain barn with lumber that is graded a little lower than the premium lumber in the main barn. Overall it’s a great place to buy lumber and the quality is always great. Their hours aren’t really set, normally it’s a call ahead 30 minutes before you arrive scenario. I usually send an email to see if they have what I’m looking for and then let them know what day I plan to stop by.” – Jesse Mcquillen

9098 St Peters Rd, Brookville, IN 47012
“They mill and kiln dry the local lumber on site. You walk into the warehouse and tell them what type of lumber you want. They’ll pull out a skid and let you sort out the pieces you want. When you are done, they’ll measure up the board feet. They’re often generous in discounting parts that have defects. If you want, they’ll straight line rip one edge, plan to thickness you want and surface sand for a small fee. Result is wood that’s ready to go. (So just don’t expect to walk in and walk out five minutes later with the two boards you want.)” – Keith Mealy

“Dwyers is great. They have a small-ish shop with a nice selection of hardwoods and I get the impression they are happy to do special orders for anything they don’t have in stock. I’m just a hobbyist, and a beginner at that, but both times I’ve been in they’ve given me tons of time, explaining the pros and cons of various woods, and have been nice enough to help me stay within my pretty limited budget. I bought the sapele in the attached photo from them. The manager also gave my son a scrap piece of ipe which he (my son) spent the next week trying and failing to dent.” – Josh McCall

“I have only been to the Lumber Yard here in Clarksville, TN a couple of times, but I have had very good results from the wood they had in selection. “Local treasure. Great selection of exotic and domestic woods at very attractive prices. The couple who run the place couldn’t be nicer or more knowledgeable.” – Josh Cook
“This is a large lumber yard with the lumber arranged in a manner that makes it easy to see what is available. There are also tables and pallets with more wood. There are long boards, wide boards, large slabs, veneer, turning blanks and small “chunks” of wood of both domestic and exotic woods. The first time I visited I made the mistake of not having enough time. If you are into woodworking, you will probably want to spend at least 2 hours getting to know the place. The best thing about this place is that it is a Mom & Pop place. I started out calling and got Cynthia on the phone. It was quickly apparent that she knows a lot more about wood than I do, and probably most woodworkers. She has a degree in Forestry and really knows her woods. They both are willing to spend time talking to you to try to match you to what you need and to tell you about the woods you are buying. It is obvious that this place is a labor of love.” – Ric McWaters

“They deal almost entirely in roughsawn wood, which may be a limitation for some, but otherwise, they have excellent quality wood at very good prices. They have a good selection of the standard domestics. They’ve been trying to expand the stock of imports, so they don’t have a huge selection, but it is growing. The same with plywood, they’re expanding, so they don’t have a huge selection yet. “I found Don listing lumber on Craigslist. I had an afternoon off and decided to drive to Barron, WI from the Twin Cities (about a 2-hour drive) to check it out. Anyway, it is just Don selling lumber on behalf of the local sawmill (I’m not sure exactly of the relationship), which carries a great selection of regional species for Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. What I like best is that I am seeking rough sawn lumber because I like to have control of the milling, and the prices are great. They are much cheaper than anyone else I’ve found in the Twin Cities area. And he will also deliver to the Twin Cities, for a maximum charge of $20. If you order enough, he won’t even charge delivery.” – Brett Bozyk

“I’ve bought rough-cut lumber twice from H&K Woods and feel like I’ve been treated very fair each time. They’ve had a good selection of wood species and sizes both times I’ve been there.
