Woodworking as a family hobby

I have been an avid DIYer ever since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I was born and raised on a farm back in the days when every farm boy learned to become a Jack of all Trades out of sheer necessity. By the time I was seventeen and left the farm to enlist in the United States Air Force I had become competent in many trades-carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, roofing, and auto mechanics. After four years in the military I entered the building trades as a professional, studying and mastering residential, commercial and industrial electrical work. Now, at 65 years young, I'm semi-retired and operate a home handyman service just to keep my hand in. I also write article for the DIY market Woodworking has always been my favorite way of relaxing and I now enjoy building furniture for my family and friends in my small shop located behind my manufactured home here in Westerlo, New York.

I'm the father of one son, the step father of a son and daughter and the grandfather of seven. A couple of years ago,  my oldest grandson really made my day when he asked me to teach him woodworking as a hobby. It soon became even more of a blessing for me because as I helped him set up a shop in the corner of his basement his father and mother started taking an interest in what we were doing. Woodworking soon turned into a family hobby for them. My daughter in-law has settled on small projects like building clocks, music boxes, etc, while my son and grandson tackle more formidable projects like coffee tables, dressers, desks, etc.
