I’m going to have a lot of fun on August 27 and 28. I’ll be at Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Indiana, teaching a class on building the infamous Chinese stool, the cover project from the last issue of Woodworking Magazine. Of all the projects I’ve made for publication, this was one of the most interesting and rewarding. At the time we had blog posts about the original stool, the mindset of chairmaking, bad things that can happen, and what happens if you let your attention wander. It all came out well in the end, the bugs have been worked out of the process, and I ended up with two great stools.
One of my reasons for teaching this project is that it gets you to think about layout, joinery and building in a different way than normal. If you go through the exercise, you come out on the other side better for the experience. The things we usually use for references don’t exist in this stool, so we have to find them. In finding and using new references we discover that angles, compound angles and through mortises in any direction aren’t any more difficult than square ones, and that things that look like they might be beyond our skills are well within reach.
