The Museum Of Design in Atlanta (http://www.museumofdesign.org/current-exhibitions/) is displaying a furniture exhibit designed by world renowned architects/designers and buit by patients in a drug rehabilitation facility in San Patrignano, Italy.  Part of the rehab's most successful approaches to redeem patients from their substance abuse or dependency is to teach them crafts and other skilled labor. Woodworking serves as a great vehicle  for a positive life change in these patients.

Some world renown architects and designers agreed to design pieces and donate them to the rehab center towards a fundraising benefit auction and all pieces were built from repurposed barrel parts. I read about the program and the exhibit on Bloomberg.com and I really recommend you read the full story.  It demonstrates the unexpected power of woodworking as a tool for psychological change. I think that the upcoming Atlanta show is worth visiting. I wish I could go….

This is a chaise lounge by French designer Marc Sadler and built by recovering addicts at the San Patrignano rehabilitation facility in Rimini, Italy.
