Readers of our magazine know that we enthusiastically embrace both power- and hand-tool techniques. We’ve found that the best-quality modern-day work tends to involve both hand and machine processes. So we set out to design a T-shirt that celebrates this sentiment. And, with the assistance of a half-gallon of Starbucks, this is what we came up with.
On the front of the T-shirt is Contributing Editor Troy Sexton using a router to cut the pin sockets using his now-legendary “$19.99 Dovetail Jig.” If you’ve read Troy’s stories over the years, you know that the guy loves his power tools. He has a one-man, six-table-saw shop. Accompanying Troy’s image is the phrase: “Popular Woodworking: The magazine for the Normite…¦”
And then on the back of the shirt is Contributing Editor Adam Cherubini, outfitted in his 18th-century woodworking garb. Adam, the author of our very popular “Arts & Mysteries” column, has used a table saw only once in his life. His shop is filled with traditional tools, which he uses almost exclusively to build furniture. Below Adam’s picture is “…¦and for those outside the norm.”
By the way, we did ask Troy and Adam for their permission to use their photos on this T-shirt. And though their ways of working wood are vastly different, they both responded to our request with exactly the same word: “Hilarious.”
The new 100-percent white cotton T-shirt is available from our store run by CafePress for $19.99. All proceeds benefit our purchasing more coffee so we can dream up more T-shirts.
Here are some supplies and tools we find essential in our everyday work around the shop. We may receive a commission from sales referred by our links; however, we have carefully selected these products for their usefulness and quality.
I have one shirt that reads ‘Garage God’ and another that says ‘I love the smell of sawdust in the morning’. Those always get attention at the local big box stores!
Isn’t it incredible that when you say ‘Norm’ to woodworkers, EVERYONE knows who you are talking about? You can say ‘David Marks’, ‘Frank Klausz’ or even ‘Sam Maloof’ and some folks will scratch their heads.
I dunno, maybe this Norm guy is onto something! 🙂
How about "Diamond end mills are a girl’s best friend"? Would that make it into your shop wardrobe?
Chris
Sorry, this will never replace my ‘power tools are a girl’s best friend’ t-shirt, and my power tools are a router, table saw, drill press, mill, bandsaw and lathe.
