Like most Ohioans, I don’t need much of an excuse to scheme on making a trip to Southern California, especially at this time of year. It’s not just the fact that the days are getting short; the annual Craftsman Weekend is right around the corner; October 14-16 in Pasadena. For fans of the Arts & Crafts period, Craftsman Weekend is the ultimate holiday with tours of historic homes and other events that aren’t available other times of the year. Pasadena is worth a visit at any time, it’s home to the Greene & Greene masterpiece the Gamble House, and the Huntington Museum collection of Greene & Greene furniture is only a couple of miles away. If that’s not enough to inspire westward migration, a new exhibit opens at the Huntington on Saturday, September 24 called “The House that Sam Built” featuring the work of Sam Maloof. But wait, there’s more.

On Friday, October 14 the moon will be in the seventh house, Jupiter will align with Mars and from 10:00 am to 2:00pm you can go on the “Woodworker’s Dream Tour”. Here is the description from the Pasadena Heritage Craftsman Weekend brochure:

Enjoy a special tour of the Huntington exhibition, “The House that Sam Built,” a major survey of the work of Sam Maloof. Guests will also have the opportunity to visit the studios of two contemporary master woodworkers, James Ipekjian and Warren Hile. Ipekjian has studied and replicated the work of Charles and Henry Greene for more than 25 years. Warren Hile creates historically correct replications from the American Arts & Crafts movement. This drive-yourself tour allows time for study and enjoyment of these three woodworking masters!

Tickets for the tour can be purchased online from Pasadena Heritage

I wonder if I can convince the new boss to approve a trip to California? If you can’t make it either, here are some resources for a vicarious thrill:
