port townsend school of woodworkingJim Tolpin just let me know that the Port Townsend School of Woodworking, located at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, Wash., is looking for a new executive director (Tim Lawson, who has held the post for 8 years, is “retiring” to concentrate on making studio furniture.). I’ve never been to Port Townsend, but wow does it look gorgeous, and I’ve listened to Christopher Schwarz rhapsodize time and again about the place. “But perhaps the most gorgeous setting for a woodworking school I have ever visited is the Port Townsend School of Woodworking in Washington state,” he wrote in 2011, in “Woodworking at the End of the World.”

I love cold rocky beaches (must be my heritage), so were I to move it would be to the Pacific Northwest or Maine – and this job sounds not only rewarding, but like a lot of fun. Sadly, my house is in far too dire a state of disrepair to even consider pulling up stakes.

So if you’re in the market and have leadership and organizational skills, and an interest in woodworking and/or preservation trades, check out below the listing Jim sent, and click on the link  to find out more:

The Port Townsend School of Woodworking–a 501 (C3) non-profit–is actively searching for an executive director to join our team. Having become nationally recognized for our excellence in preserving and passing on traditional woodworking skills through entry- to master-level classes, we are now looking for an individual to help guide us through the next exciting phase of our development. The demand for deep craft knowledge is growing, and our facilities, staff and programs need to expand dramatically to meet the challenge. Are you (or can you help us find) this person?   If so, please go online to our official Job Announcement to learn more.

Even though I know this is way out of my league, I’m mentally packing my bags as I type. What a cool opportunity this would be!

These kind of opportunities only come along once in a great while. Holy crap! If you are even remotely thinking it might be a cool gig, throw your hat in the ring, Megan. You can find another house in disrepair when you get there. I lived the Pacific Northwest (Corvallis, OR) for a time. That whole region is phenomenal.
