When we started the Woodworking in America conference several years ago, one of our goals was to bring in instructors who offer a unique perspective. This year, we looked to the west coast and invited Ejler Hjorth-Westh, one of the instructors at the College of the Redwoods Fine Furniture program, the school founded by James Krenov. Ejler attended COR from 1990-1992 and in addition to building furniture he also has experience in building wood boats. You can read his biography on the school’s web site.
On Saturday morning, Ejler will be teaching a class on “Chairs: Style & Substance,” in which he will be sharing his techniques for design and construction, including the jigs and forms he uses and his approach to joinery. On Saturday afternoon, his topic will be “Working With Curves: Design & Execution.” Curved elements open a new realm of design possibilities, but that brings along a series of challenges, from designing graceful curves to achieving a smooth surface, to joining these elements. One thing new this year at Woodworking in America are the sessions on Sunday morning. We’ve added some time to all the class sessions this year, and on the final day, classes will be in-depth sessions. Ejler’s Sunday seminar will be “The Nuts & Bolts of Commission Work: Business, Customer Relations, Failure and Success.” If you’re considering becoming a full-time professional woodworking, you won’t want to miss what can go wrong, and learn how to ensure that things go right.
