Last time I showed you pictures of Deer Island, Maine and the woodshop at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Steff's class was 5 days long. During that time we lived on the Haystack campus, ate at the school's fantastic dining hall and enjoyed the woods and the beaches of the Island. The campus is elevated above the ground, so rooms, studios and practically everything else hovers above the forest floor.
My own attempt at carving was modest. I did not have much time to practice it like the other students because I had to help Steff with milling wood, sharpening, and more. I also advised students and helped in other school chores. Still, I managed to work on a collage of facial features of my partner James. To do this I looked at pictures of him on my computer and carved: an eye, ear, nose, mouth. In the case of the mouth I took the liberty to stray away from the hyperrealism that the exercise demanded. Nevertheless, I like the outcome.
