screws a quick guide

I was hoping to get into the shop today to finish the assembly on my current project, a kitchen island, and post about that. But in between meetings, I’ve been (metaphorically) chained to my desk all day. So…no shop time.

I’ll be using screws to secure the piece together. But because I have no shop shots to share, instead, here’s a handy quick-reference guide to screw types and uses. It’s from the first issue (March 2004) of Woodworking Magazine. Click on the link below to download a PDF.

I’m taking tomorrow afternoon off work; you’ll find me in the shop, drill/driver in hand. Then my No. 4…and with luck and decent weather, a spray gun shortly thereafter.

Great chart re. screws. Just FYI, Square Recess screws are called Robertson, after the inventor, a Canadian. Just like Phillips screws are called Phillips, not star.

My eyes initially read the title as “A Quick Screw Guide”, which made me think and look again.

I’ve just bought some stainless steel 1/4-20 Pan Head Phillips screws from Amazonand this chart indicates that they are indeed a ‘Combo-Square Recess’.

    I agree with you though.
