Since I started at Popular Woodworking Magazine (PWM), I’ve gotten e-mails on a weekly basis asking about the status of my school and/or if I will be teaching anywhere in the near future. Well, to answer those questions in reverse order, I am scheduled to teach two classes (so far this year) at Ron Herman’s place in Columbus, Ohio, and my school is on hiatus.
Having only completed the physical move in mid-November, most everything (including tools) is still boxed and in storage. Thanks Ohio for the snowy welcome. Until I decide what is happening as far as a shop is concerned, I’m going to only be teaching at other places (if anyone will have me).
Even when I get my shop up and running, it may take some time before I actually start teaching classes there. And, I’m sure that once I do, the classes will be limited in number and shorter in length. Most likely, I will not be teaching 20+ week-long classes per year considering I have a day job – or something that resembles a day job. I mean, how many of you wouldn’t love to be paid to play in the shop, building projects for publication in the magazine and testing out all kinds of new tools and shop gadgets?
When I do finally get things settled with my shop, and start teaching some weekend classes, I’ll let everyone know.
Until that time, we’ll all have to make do with the classes I’ll be teaching at Ron Herman’s (and anywhere else I might end up). The first class I’ll be teaching is a little less than two weeks from now (March 22 to be exact). It’s going to essentially be a one day version of my “Dovetail Blitz” class I taught at my school for the last five or six years. The students are going to learn all about what a dovetail is, how they work and how to make through and half-blind dovetails quickly, easily and consistently. I’ll work with the students individually on their tools and techniques.
The best part is, you also get Ron thrown into the mix. Not only is Ron an extremely knowledgeable craftsman but, with the two of us in the house, you’ll laugh as much as you’ll learn.
The second class at Ron’s is May 10 and I’ll be teaching advanced dovetails. I’ll have you cutting everything from full-blind dovetails to Bermuda Dovetails by the end of the class. There are still spaces in both classes and you can sign up at Ron’s web site or through e-mail (info@woodworkingwithron.com).
If I end up doing more classes on the road (or here at the PWM shop), I’ll let you know where and when. If you’re unable to make the classes in Columbus, you can always pick up one (or both) of my dovetailing DVDs (“Dovetailing Apprenticeship” and “Dovetail Mastery“) at shopwoodworking.com.
Of course, I will be teaching at Woodworking in America (WIA) this September 12th through 14th in Winston-Salem. If you have never been to WIA before, the list of presenters should be more than enough motivation to make this the year.
p.s. I cannot guarantee the presence of the turkey hat…
Here are some supplies and tools we find essential in our everyday work around the shop. We may receive a commission from sales referred by our links; however, we have carefully selected these products for their usefulness and quality.
